Eli is later described as Director of Mossad. Due to her relation to Ari, Ziva's appearance and eventual assignment to Gibbs' team draws fierce resentment from team member Anthony DiNozzoforensic specialist Abby Sciuto, and even from Gibbs himself when he learns that Director Shepard had assigned Ziva to his team without his knowledge.
She later proves her worth in the same episode by using her training to save herself and Dr. Donald "Ducky" Mallard from Dr. Burns, a rogue member of the Smithsonian Anthropology Lab. This in turn causes the team to develop a new-found respect for her and sets the foundation for Ziva's strong friendship with Ducky.
In "Shalom", the fourth season premiere, she is framed by Iranian agents for the murder of two FBI officers and a suspect in their custody who was wanted for crimes against Israel. Accused of being a double agent, she becomes a fugitive and is forced to ask for help from Gibbs, who had retired from NCIS at the end of season 3 and is living in Mexico. This elicits concern from Tony and others when it becomes clear that she is "falling in love with a dying man". Ziva assures him that she will never forget him now and, after his death, she is shown frequently wearing the orange beanie that Lt.
Sanders wore when he went running. In the fifth season finale, " Judgment Day Part 2 ", Ziva's liaison position is terminated under the orders of newly appointed Director Vance following the death of Director Shepard. She returns to the team at the conclusion of the episode.
Ziva, as a result, tells Gibbs that she cannot continue to work with Tony as she no longer trusts him, and Gibbs accepts this for the time being, saying that he will give her time to "remember who she can trust". Shortly after returning to Mossad full-time, she is sent on a mission to take down a terrorist in Somalia named Saleem Ulman.
She is subsequently captured and held hostage for several months. Following her rescue, she resigns from Mossad and applies to become a full-fledged NCIS agent and an American citizen.
However, it is made clear that she suffered extensive abuse and torture and it is implied that she was raped as well while in captivity.
Her probationary period officially ends in the season 9 premiere. Midway through the tenth season, Ziva's estranged father, Eli, resurfaces in the episode " Shabbat Shalom " in the hope of healing their relationship.
During his time in Washington, he is also secretly meeting with a Palestinian born Iranian with an unclear connection to the Iranian government whom he knows from childhood.
Together, they hope to initiate the beginning of a peace agreement between Israel and Iran. At the end of the episode, while having a Shabbat dinner at Director Vance's house, an unknown shooter opens fire on the house, killing Eli and fatally wounding Vance's wife, who dies at the hospital. The shooter evades capture and then kills the Iranian by triggering a bomb attached to his car. On discovering her father's body, Ziva breaks down sobbing and praying in Hebrew. Throughout the episode, both she and Vance attempt to participate in the investigation despite being prohibited due to their connections with the deceased.
Bodner found out about the secret discussions between his boss and the Iranian official, and believes that David's actions could seriously threaten Israel's security. After a failed attempt to kill Ziva, he escapes and disappears. Executive producer Gary Glasberg divulged that the plot was designed to draw out aspects of the character's personality that had been dormant for several years, saying, "People are going to see a Ziva David that they haven't seen in a long time.
There is a strength and a resolute determination. Following an explosion, and the subsequent death of Secretary Clayton Jarvis, the remaining members of Gibbs' team are informed that Ziva's life is in danger.
DiNozzo travels to Israel in order to ensure her safety, and the two share a passionate kiss. In season thirteen, it is revealed that they also consummated their relationship, leading to Ziva becoming pregnant.
Though DiNozzo was not informed of this, Ziva gave birth to a daughter named Tali. Although Tali is found alive, the NCIS crew are informed that Ziva is dead, though her remains are not found at the house.
Prior to the season thirteen finale, Ziva builds a strong friendship with her father's successor - Director Orli Elbaz - who later informs DiNozzo of the difficulty Ziva had faced while deciding whether to inform him of the birth of their daughter which Tony is given care of after Ziva is killed. Characterization[ edit ] I'm not trying to play her as if I hope people like my character.
I'm trying to make her as three dimensional as I can. I feel people are likable and not likable and I'm trying to find all those nooks and crannies in my character. She's not afraid of men. She takes things to the extreme. She knows how to use all sorts of things—guns and knives—I would never imagine using.
She's one tough woman, but it doesn't take away from the fact that she's still very sexy and playful and all of that. But, when it comes to work she means business. She approaches her job with zeal, appearing to truly believe in what she does.
She is very committed to the ideals of the U. In spite of this, Ziva is capable of displaying playfulness, nearly childishness at times, such as in "Heartland" when she gleefully races McGee to be the first to tell Tony and Abby about meeting Gibbs' father. She is particularly empathetic towards children, as demonstrated in episodes such as " Dagger " and "Outlaws and In-Laws".
Ziva is an Israeli Jewand was always seen wearing a Star of David pendant until her capture in Somaliawhere her captor ripped it off her neck.
Shortly before her captivity, she said that she "would sooner die than take this necklace off". In the aftermath of her father's death in Season 10, she is shown praying in a synagogue, visiting the Western Wall in Jerusalem, and planting an olive tree.
Despite having lost friends and family to radical Islamic terrorist groups like Hamas, she does not resent Muslims in general. I put on my cargos, my T-Shirt, my microphone, my hair is usually up in a ponytail and I wear very little makeup.
Despite this, she agreed to after executive producer Shane Brennan described the scene. Costume designers wanted to show her acclimation to life in the United States and in doing so made her wardrobe less militarily influenced. You get home and you're exhausted, but you feel like you've really worked. Tony cares about Ziva and wants to make sure she's not mixed up with the wrong kind of guy, so he's going to be watchful and protective of her.
We kept it light and we kept it fun, and we kept it like two people who are genuinely in to each other and wanting to move things along. It's about what's going on between the lines. These two people are touchy-feely, and that's different for Ziva. We'll see what the audience thinks, but for me, he feels potential and possibility in a way that he hasn't for years.
EJ is a mirror, so he sees that hope for himself again. She has her eccentricities as well, which makes her adorable to Tony and highly irritating to Ziva. She is a team leader, having accepted the assignment in Rota, Spain that Tony had turned down several years prior. Ziva abruptly ends their relationship after learning that he had lied to her directly about his reasoning for being in Washington, D.
When EJ assures him that they will find Ziva, he replies that "it's just different for some of us". EJ takes an extended leave of absence with the conclusion of the season, ending her affair with Tony. Ziva and Ray repair their relationship somewhat, and he gives her an empty ring box as a "promise" before leaving for a long-term assignment. Glasberg commented, "Ziva and Ray are a little open-ended at the moment.
There isn't any closure to it. We'll have to see where it leads, but I think he was pretty clear that he has a job to do at the moment, and that's gonna be the primary focus for him. After a fallout with Tony, she tells him that Ziva respects him and cares about him. He at first deflects but then says, "Surround yourself with people you would give your own life for.
He's protective of her and cares about her and has feelings for her, and, at the end of the day, wants to make sure that she's safe and happy with the direction of her life. Season X and the Year of Tiva and an emotional farewell[ edit ] They've been through extraordinary circumstances together, so it doesn't necessarily require the explosion.
There's a real, plain-spoken, straight read between them, so they don't have to jump through hoops. When she watches Tony does his stuff or he watches her hide behind that barricade of an Israeli assassin princess mentality, they both clock it, they know it and they can move around each other.
It's a great relationship. Tony and Ziva, feeling bad about missing Jimmy and Breena's wedding, try to cheer each other up by joking about how awful weddings are—an exchange that begins to take on meaning when they become wistful about "the vow, the ring, the kiss, the ketubah Later, when the Navy Yard is seconds from exploding, Ziva refuses to leave the building without Tony.
The bomb goes off while they are still in the elevator; Ziva and Tony fall to the ground, with Tony's arm around her waist, and their free hands clasped tightly as the elevator appears to crash. This is the year. I've had years in which I thought, 'Oh my God, this a Tiva year,' and there have been years he thought were Tiva years…. The truth is, we have yet to find out where that storyline is going to go. I think they're toying around with us like they always do. Weatherly stated, "She was really the beginning of his love for movies and why that is such a deep, penetrating part of who he is.
The last gift she gave him was to turn to the movies as a moral compass. It's a profound, soft, vulnerable moment. Tony, believing her to be going on a date, badgers her until she admits that she goes to the opera every year on her deceased sister's birthday, as Tali had wanted to be a singer. Unable to obtain tickets for her himself, he makes a CD of opera music and gives it to her to listen to.
We end up back in Tony's apartment, and there's some really lovely, emotional stuff that happens. It's all the things I hope that people who enjoy the Tony-Ziva relationship will look for. Near the end of the episode, he comes to see her off as she prepares to fly to Israel for Eli's funeral and assures her in Hebrew that she is not alone.
I think they're always testing that relationship and they're always throwing things at it to see how far they can take [it]. It's already a very complex relationship. They're very close; they're very good friends; and they trust each other.
So, I think the complexity of it all can go further and I think they're going to explore more. I like things the way they are, so I'm not in [to] that. I'm petitioning against it. Before the episode aired, Glasberg disclosed that they would share a slow dance while there, resulting in "a very personal moment of vulnerability where her guard goes down and she lets herself melt into his arms". Elbaz was the reason her parents split up.
She tells Tony, "If it were not for Orli, things would be different. I would be a different person. Tony replies, "Then I should catch her before she leaves, you know, and thank her. Michael and I crafted that scene. We felt the moment was very intimate, and we thought that just looking at each other was enough. And the director kept saying, 'No, I want the moment to be longer,' and we had to sort of fight the director.
Finally, I had to say, 'Listen, if there was any more time of staring into each other's eyes, it would be like, cut to a hotel room. We certainly enjoyed it. I told [Tony] — without really realizing what I was saying and then I realized it came out the wrong way — I said, 'God, I felt a little drunk when I was staring at you. They both survive the crash, and despite being urged to back off by various other characters, Ziva ultimately kills Bodnar in the following episode.
This leads to DOD investigator Richard Parsons Colin Hanks initiating a witch hunt against the team and Ziva being aggressively interrogated about her conduct in the aftermath of her father's death.
When he approaches Ziva about the accusation, she admits that it was a "moment of weakness" because she felt alone. This obviously hurts Tony, and he says, "My Hebrew must not be as good as I thought because I could've sworn when I dropped you off at the airport, I told you you are not alone". Ziva recalls this, and Tony says that they must have different interpretations before walking away.
Despite this, he later confronts Parsons, demanding that Ziva be left alone and calling her his best friend. I think there's a little more to it than that. After her military service was over, she later joined Mossad and also the Kidon Unit, becoming the Control Officer to Mossad agent, Ari Haswari who was also her half-brother. During her time in the Kidon, she met Michael Rivkin who became her partner and boyfriend as well as Namir Eschel with all three conducting various missions together.
Following her resignation, Ziva, now a civilian returned to Israel, presumably resulting in her severing her ties with the United States and she ultimately chose to remain there despite Tony attempting to convince her to return to the States. Presumably, up until her own death, Ziva remained a citizen of Israel and it's not known if her citizenship and her ties with the States remained intact or if they had been taken back as a result of her actions.
Personality In the beginning, Ziva was emotionally distant and unwilling to open herself up to her colleagues but she later began to mellow, even developing a strong friendship with young children too.
She had a strong loyalty and devotion to her teammates, especially Gibbs whom she saw as a father figure. However, after her father was killed, Ziva's personality and attitude changed as she became hellbent on revenge, almost to the point of fixation in finding out who had ordered her father's assassination. Appearance Ziva was a young Israeli woman of athletic build with long dark brown hair, brown eyes and tanned skin.
When she first arrived at NCIS, she wore a jacket with a single t-shirt underneath along with combat trousers and boots. She also wore a bandanna as well. Upon joining the main NCIS team, Ziva's dress style remained the same for a year although she was occasionally seen wearing skirts or high heels, usually in the office or sometimes on the field, especially during a undercover assignment but usually wears trousers and normal shoes as well.
For Season 3 and 4. Ziva often wore a sports watch similar to what McGee would wear during Season 6 but at the beginning of Season 5, Ziva later changed her watch and start wearing a silver watch quite similar to what her predecessor had worn and she would continue wearing it until her resignation.
Ziva originally had long curly black or blown hair that hung down past her shoulders and in addition to wearing it down, she often tied her hair up into either a ponytail.
In later years, she often kept her hair up in a single plait. She also tied her hair up when she was out in the field, processing a crime scene or in a stand-off with a suspect with the hair often being placed into a single bun which was often visible underneath Ziva's own NCIS cap. Ziva also usually parted her hair to either the left or right side of her face, leaving her earrings visible. In NCIS Season 10, Ziva's hair was presumably dyed light brown with some small blonde highlights visible with the hair itself often hanging past Ziva's shoulders, sometimes even coming close to landing on her desk.
The hair later even came to hanging past down her shoulders, nearly being elbow-length. In addition, Ziva also stopped wearing her hair in a plait, instead choosing to either have it hanging down, covering her ears or tied up and by the time of her final appearance, had opted to leave her hair down altogether instead of usually up in a ponytail with her hair hanging past her shoulders although as before, the right side of her hair hung down, nearly covering her face while the left side was placed back behind her left ear.
She wore this for the first six years of her employment with Mossad before she lost it after being captured by men loyal to Saleem Ulman ripping off the pendant. Upon returning to America, Ziva went without wearing the Star of David pendant before she received a newer version of her original pendant although unlike its predecessor, the new pendant Ziva later wore seemed to be lighter with the Star of David itself often reflecting when caught in light.
Abilities As a former operative with the Iraseli Mossad, Ziva was highly skilled in interrogation, performing assassinations or shootings and could even hold her own in hand-to-hand combat. After six or seven years working for NCIS, Ziva also gained the ability to process a crime scene all by herself, collect any evidence and she could even interrogate any suspects she interviewed without having to resort to physical violence or torture to get the information she needed, making her a valuable asset to both the NCIS agency and also the NCIS Major Case Response Team Hand to Hand Combat One of Ziva's primary skills as a Mossad operative was hand-to-hand combat.
On many occasions, she demonstrated that she was exceptionally skilled at holding her own, especially against someone else who had undergone hand-to-hand combat training as well and due to her training, Ziva was able to either lethally or non-lethally incapacitate any opponent.
Ziva fought Commander Nelson Tunney and was capable of holding her own against the rogue Commander, easily besting Tunney. Ziva managed to successfully incapacitate two members of a Russian mercenary group who had been hired to kidnap a pregnant Navy Lieutenant. Firearms Ziva was skilled in the use of firearms, second only to Gibbs. She was capable of wielding and using any firearm that comes into her possession with incredible skill and was a sharp shooter as well as a terrific marksman, her shots capable of killing an opponent if she chooses.
Lockpicking Ziva was skilled in lockpicking, a skill that had helped her and her NCIS colleagues gain access to a locked building such as a house or a warehouse. Relationships Anthony DiNozzo Tony and Ziva In the beginning, Tony and Ziva's relationship was non-existance due to the fact that Tony was still coming to terms with the murder of his previous partner and Ziva's predecessor, Caitlin Todd but the two later became colleagues and close friends, even developing an attraction to each other as well.
Tony and Ziva embarked on their first ever undercover mission together where they posed as a husband and wife team of assassins. Ziva learnt that Mossad had been spying on her on her father's orders and even received photographs of Tony visiting her apartment. Despite all the flirting, the two did care for each other, Tony was surprised by Ziva falling in love with Lieutenant Roy Sanders although Sanders was slowly dying from radiation poisoning.
The role was soon reserved where Ziva encouraged Tony to fight for what he loved after she overheard Tony talking to his undercover girlfriend, Jeanne Benoit. Throughout the rest of Season 4, Ziva showed a great concern for Tony's constant and unexplained disappearances with Ziva even believing that Tony may be ill. Ziva reacted with "I knew it" when she, Gibbs and McGee learnt from Jenny that Tony had been working on an undercover operation.
Ziva questions Tony about soul mates. However, later in that season, Ziva's feelings toward Tony appear to have become more platonic. After Jeanne accused Tony of murder she told him to "be a man" and apologize to Jeanne, which he does. After shows signs of feelings between Ziva and Tony becoming more obvious. Ziva and Tony admitted to Gibbs that they miss each other. When Ziva accompanied Gibbs onto the USS Seahawk as part of an investigation, she noticed Tony had three pictures of her in a bikini pinned up in his room these pictures were taken during Judgment Day Part 1.
They also had some tense moments on board the ship. The banter between them remained the same, but in "Nine Lives," Tony shows an interest in Ziva's vacation to Israel, which she takes despite the fact that she'd only just returned to the United States. Upon finding a picture of a man on her desk, Tony's interest deepened, not knowing that the man in the picture was Ziva's Mossad partner.
Tony also wished Ziva a safe trip Nisiya Tova in Hebrew, demonstrating that he took the effort to learn at least that phrase in her native language. Ziva and Tony were placed into a war game, during which they were arrested and assaulted by security personnel. They both rose to each others' defense physically — though they need to do so because Ziva broke orders not to engage and the soldiers attacked them.
They shared a moment in an elevator where Ziva admits that she only fought the guards out of impulse. They both admit they are 'tired of pretending', while Tony meant he is talking about the mole hunt and lying to each other, Ziva made no such modifiers. Ziva was shown taking care of Amanda at her desk, watching over her as she drew; while Tony brought her breakfast.
Tony notices that Ziva was upset but instead of approaching her, he glanced at her sympathetically. Tony asked Ziva to go to a midnight screening of "Goodfellas" with him, but she decided to practice her air guitar instead. Although Ziva had been teasing Tony about a former flame who has since remarried to a metro detective, she asked him if he ever regretted not having a wife and children around Christmas. Tony avoided the question and made an excuse to leave.
