Thanks to Getafix and his magic potion, the work goes forward on schedule, despite multiple attempts by Edifis's arch rival, Artifis, to sabotage the construction after Edifis says he doesn't want his help, claiming Artifis works people too hard. Artifis tells the workers to demand less whipping, which would slow construction.
However Getafix gives the workers magic potion. Cleopatra summons Edifis, who claims to be the best architect in Egypt.

Thanks to Getafix and his magic potion, the work goes forward on schedule, despite multiple attempts by Edifis' arch rival, Artifisto sabotage the construction.

Just before the palace is due to be completed, Caesar intervenes by sending legions to try and destroy the palace. The Gauls fight off the Roman soldiers, but Caesar proceeds to shell the building with his catapults. In desperation, Asterix and Dogmatix deliver the news to Cleopatra. A furious Cleopatra then hurries to the construction site to give Caesar a thorough tongue lashing.

Caesar's legions are required to fix the damage they caused without any magic potion to help them and the palace is successfully completed on time. Cleopatra wins her bet and covers Edifis with gold. However, the book itself is largely an extended parody of the then-recent film Cleopatrastarring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.
The book's cover parodies the film's poster. A running gag throughout the album and also later albums is Cleopatra's beautiful nose, which is admired by everyone. This is an allusion to the French philosopher Blaise Pascalwho had articulated the historical significance of Cleopatra's beauty by saying in his painting that "Cleopatra's nose, had it been shorter, the whole face of the world would have been changed". Cleopatra has an entourage of four courtesans, one of which is named Guimieukis pronounced " Gimme-a-kiss " in French and serves as a parodic Love Interest for Asterix. The character of Vodafonis, who is depicted as the speaker of the workers, while in the book they didn't really have any.
As typical of Miramaxa good 20 minutes or so was cut in the English version. Most notable being the Running Gag of people commenting on Cleopatra's nose, but a lot of scenes with Obelix was also cut for some reason. Caesar's second-in-command Caius Ceplus is a Roman soldier with a very Vader-like helmet and cape. This seems like a coincidence at first, until the final battle where he suddenly starts talking with Vader Breath.
The Door Slams You: The one scene that matches most faithfully the comic and earlier Animated Adaptation in fact, using pretty much the same angle. Obelix warns the Egyptian prison guard that he and his fellow Gauls are about to come out of their cell, but the guard just laughs it off, thinking he's safe sitting behind the heavy reinforced door.

While he's still shown not to be the best of his craft due to his unusual decisions, Edifis's construction abilities aren't shown to be as bad as his comic self, said unusual decisions including a door high on a wall I don't like too much that. Of the comic book. When Asterix doesn't have any magic potion left, a True Love's Kiss helps. Ceplus, unlike Edifis, outright states that he doesn't care about names he only gets three right: Caesar's, Cleopatra's, and Cartapus's and, depending on who he's talking to, will correct himself or snap at being corrected.
